Middle School Band FAQs

  • Which instruments can I choose from? There are a variety of instruments from each family that students may choose. The instrument families include:

    • Woodwinds: flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, and saxophone

    • Brass: trumpet, horn, trombone, euphonium, and tuba

    • Percussion: all percussion students will learn concert snare drum, marimba, and accessory percussion.

  • How do I choose an instrument? On Instrument Selection Day, our staff of expert music teachers will help you try out several instruments to find one that is a good fit for your body and personality. Your band director will help you evaluate your choices as we work together to find the perfect fit!

  • Once I know what I'm playing, how will I get an instrument? Flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, and trombone can be rented from a local music store like Strait Music. The more expensive instruments like oboe, bassoon, horn, euphonium, and tuba are owned by LTISD and can be checked out for an annual maintenance fee. Instrument rental information will be available after instrument selections are made.

  • How much time is required for beginning band? Most of the instruction and group rehearsal in beginning band takes place during the school day. Occasionally, we will have a few rehearsals after school to prepare for a performance, which is flexible depending on the needs of the group. Students will be most successful and engaged in learning their instrument by practicing outside of school a few times per week. Band students are often involved in several different extracurricular activities, like club sports, private dance studios, Boy and Girl Scouts, Student Council, and more!
